Daily affirmations for iPhone

Some of the loudest voices in your life are the ones nobody else can hear.

Soul Lift is a daily affirmation app built on a single, unglamorous idea — that the way you speak to yourself is a habit, and habits are changed by repetition rather than insight.

It arrives before you have asked for anything.

The premise

A thought you have had ten thousand times is not wiser than one you have had twice. It is just better paved.

Most of us repeat the same handful of thoughts about ourselves for years without ever choosing them. They were handed to us early and hardened into habit while we were busy elsewhere. That is really all an unkind inner voice is — not a truth about you, and not a character flaw.

Which is also the good news, because repetition is the only thing that has ever changed one. A different road gets built the same way the old one was: by going down it again, and again, on ordinary days when nothing seems to be happening.

The catch it is designed around

Written to be taken, not shouted.

An affirmation only does anything if some part of you can accept it. Declare something your mind rejects and you do not get belief — you get an argument, and you lose it. So the 5,600 sentences here are plausible, specific, and close enough to where you already are that you can sit with one.

An aurora over a pine forest — the Aurora background.
Self-love

I am enough, exactly as I am.

Mist and low sun through trees — the Dawn background.
Patience

Slow is still moving.

A crescent moon in violet cloud — the Crescent background.
Sleep

The day is done. I am allowed to stop.

A blue nebula in deep space — the Cosmos background.
Anxiety

My thoughts are not predictions.

Wind-carved sand at low light — the Dunes background.
Burnout

I am a person, not an output.

Real lines, on real backgrounds. Swipe for another when one does not land.

What it does

One small practice, kept out of your way.

One line a day

A single affirmation each morning, chosen against what you said you wanted to work on. 5,600 of them across 112 topics — swipe for another when one does not land.

The same home screen on a different background: "I trust myself to make the right decisions."

Your own words

Write your own affirmations and they join the daily rotation alongside the library. Keep the ones that land.

On your wrist

Widgets for the Home and Lock Screen, and an Apple Watch app that works with your phone out of range.

The Apple Watch app showing the line "I am allowed to take up space."

A streak worth keeping

It counts the days you showed up and nothing else. A missed day is never marked as a failure.

108 backgrounds

Or bring your own photo and frame it. Every one is scrimmed against the text that sits on it, so the words stay readable rather than being left to chance.

Eight of Soul Lift's backgrounds side by side: a nebula, an aurora, surf, a lavender field, a forest, a whitewashed hillside town, desert dunes and a crescent moon.
When a line is not enough

23 guided sessions, and not one of them speaks

Three are chosen for you each morning against the topics you picked. A breathing orb sets the pace, the words arrive one at a time, and a quiet bed of music holds underneath.

Nothing is read aloud, and that is deliberate. Two spoken versions were built and removed: a voice sets a pace you have to keep up with for a line already in front of you. So a session works with the sound off, on a train, at 6am, beside someone asleep.

Peer-reviewed research

Small but consistent is the honest claim, and it is the one this app is built to.

Soul Lift is not therapy and does not treat anything. It is a place to practise.

144 studies A meta-analysis of the self-affirmation literature found the effects small but consistent (Epton et al., 2015).
vmPFC In brain imaging, self-affirmation activates the ventromedial prefrontal cortex and ventral striatum — and that activation predicted who changed their behaviour a month later (Cascio et al., 2016).
Less cortisol People who affirmed their values before a stress task produced less of it than those who did not (Creswell et al., 2005).
